Here’s and interesting user’s guide to DRM by the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation).
The guide (meaningfully titled “The customer is always wrong”) states some basic facts about Apple’s, Microsoft’s, Real’s and Napster’s online music services; some facts they aren’t likely to tell you (because we know marketing is more important than truth when it comes to making money…).
